Children's School Holiday workshops

Drawing REAL animals with Sandra Morris

Taking children through the steps of drawing live animals - from looking initially at basic shapes and then drawing the form. Working with quick gestural studies and then longer intense observation. 

An introduction to the animals involved - A look at examples of animal drawings in different mediums with an emphasis on sketching.

Demonstration of gestural drawing to capture quick study. And then more intensely observed drawing starting with basic shapes and then forming the 3D body 

Discussion on animal’s mood/stance etc and how to capture this - facial and body expressions. Discussions on importance of our own wildlife. 

Venue: Selwyn College, Kohimarama Road, Kohimarama, Auckland 

Dates: Monday 30 September - Tuesday 1 October 2024

Adult Workshops
Children's Book Illustration 

Sandra Morris is passionate about her work and offers a wealth of knowledge and experience. Here is an opportunity for aspiring author/illustrators to build expertise and technique as they learn the skills of developing and illustrating a picture book. This hands-on, informative programme will show you how to take your picture book from concept to submission.

Character Development

Learn techniques to create and develop your very own storybook characters. Suitable for those with basic drawing ability. The two day course is held on a consecutive Saturday and Sunday. The course will cover:

  • an introduction to picture books — What makes a successful picture book?

  • character mapping

  • learn drawing techniques that bring your character to life 

  • develop more dynamic character drawings through making a 3D model

Drawing Botanicals

I will introduce you to the world of botanical art using techniques that are a great way to start. Learning to use colour pencils correctly and pen and ink stipple, you will leave the course not only with new skills but a set of high quality pencils to continue your practice.

Keeping a Nature Journal

Keeping a nature journal is a great way of slowing down and being in the moment. Learn the nuts and bolts of effectively observing and recording what you see - whether it be a habitat or a collection of items discovered on your walks.
